All juiced up!

Do you juice? No? Know anybody who does? I'm talking about juicing produce, obviously. Not steroids. Only natural stuff here!

Friends of the family sent us an engagement gift a few months back... we got the gift of health by juicing! We were gifted a Breville Juicer. After seeing the documentary "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" I had been intrigued with juicing! The man in the documentary recommends trying a juice fast. I really want to try one one day to really get the toxins out of your body, replenish it with nutrients, re-hydrate and re-boot. It's a great way to kind of jump start a new healthier lifestyle! The only problem is, the guy doesn't recommend excercise while juicing... you need a lot more produce in order to get the calories you need. So as I am perpetually training for SOMETHING (usually a 13.1, but right now it's a 26.2), I can't do the juice fast.

Still... I really enjoy stopping by the co-op or the farmer's market and picking up produce to juice! Our juicer is a centrifuge type that takes out most of the needless fiber. It's best to use thick and chunky fruits and veggies. I saw in a local juice bar that they use this type of juicer for carrots, apples, beets and the like and then they throw the juice in the Vitamix and mix in the softer things like whole spinach and spirulina. I'm totally dying for a Vitamix... maybe someone will surprise us with one for our wedding! If not, we'll start saving for it :)

Anyway, adding juice to your regular diet is an easy and DELICIOUS way to get in your daily serving of fruits and veggies! You do need quite a lot of produce to make juice. Generally, we compost the leftover fibers, but you can use them to make stock for soups, too! Here is a recent yummy concoction:

We made a juice with kale, carrots, celery, tomatoes and then added apples for sweetness! The carrots
are themselves pretty sweet, too.

We often add in whatever we have in the kitchen... lemons (you need to peel those first), ginger, oranges (again, peeled), pears. I urge you to pull your old juicer out of your dusty closet, or go get a new one if you're new to this whole thing. We really love it and feel so much better when we drink our juice!
